Harry Potter fever as JK Rowling launches online treasure hunt

JK Rowling’s magical Harry Potter world is set to be revived on Thursday in an online game leading to real life prizes.

Could this be how the Pottermore site will look when its live?

It appears the author’s latest project, the eagerly anticipated Pottermore, will involve a treasure hunt linked to an online game. Many fans will have feared that with the forthcoming release of the second part of the final Harry Potter film, there would be no further adventures for Harry, Ron and Hermione.

All will be revealed on Thursday, with a countdown clock linked to the Pottermore website indicating that it will go live at noon London time.

“The owls are gathering … Find out why soon” is all the link says.

What many Potter fans would like most would be an eighth novel to follow on from the seventh and “final” instalment “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” published in 2007. But Rowling’s publicist has already made clear that it would not involve a new book.

About Pottermore

JK Rowling will announce details of her latest project at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London at lunchtime on Thursday. The author is expected to explain the details of the online treasure hunt. It is said to be a hi-tech online game, offering clues to prizes that may be hidden in the real world.

It has been reported that the game will contain clues to find an unreleased number of magic wands hidden in both Britain and America, and possibly other countries as well.

While details about Pottermore remain vague, it would appear the Potter online treasure hunt will be complex as impressive. Although unwilling to reveal any details, Andrew Sims of Potter fan site Mugglenet, said: “[I] can tell you that it is fantastic. I’d say more but I had to make an unbreakable vow concerning its secrecy.”

Fellow Potter fan site Leaky Cauldron has simply described Pottermore as “breathtaking.”

The marketing behind Pottermore has turned into a strategic game in itself, and has been fueled by the excitement around the finale “Potter” movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, due out next month.
