Fancy A Harry Potter Wand That Does Actual Magic?

The world’s very first Harry Potter STEM product – the Harry Potter Kano coding – is being launched by Kano, the company behind computers that you can make and code yourself. Manufactured in partnership with Warner Bros, the kit allows you to create a wireless Harry Potter wand that actually does tricks.

Okay, it’s not actual magic, it’s more clever coding and the aim of this game is to get kids, and indeed people of all ages, a basic knowledge of coding that will hopefully entice them to want to develop those skills further.

“The basic narrative that underpins what we do at Kano, is that we live in this age of 20 billion-plus connected computing devices and less than 50 million people can understand them and influence them below the surface.

We all carry these around. We spend a third of our waking hours on them, but only a small and secret subsection are classed as computer scientists, programmers and machine learning experts who can speak the magic that actually makes these devices work,” explains Alex Klein, Kano’s CEO, and founder.

The wand can do all of this because it contains a gyroscope, an accelerometer and a magnetometer sensor to allow it to detect the user’s location and speed in tridimensional space and track his or her hand movements. These sensors enable the wand to place the cursor on the screen at exactly the spot it’s pointed at.

Partnering with Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. doesn’t license its Harry Potter brand to anyone.

“It was pretty cool to see the reaction of the team at Warner Bros.,” says Klein. “It was obviously the first time coding and Harry Potter and the wizarding world had been combined and I think that the quality of our products gave us that edge.”

Priced at $99, the Harry Potter wand kit went on sale worldwide on July 23, 2018, for preorder and it launches and ships to buyers at the beginning of October. It’s compatible with iOS and Android, Windows and Mac tablets and computers.

“There is a good analogy here to Harry Potter. In the world of Harry Potter there is a similar class of wizards, who operate below the surface of the day to day, who have extraordinary powers and spells, but if you’re born a Muggle your stuffed. If you’re a Muggle you can’t become magic, but in our world, you can. You can learn these skills.

“The idea of this kit is to build your own wand, cast spells on screen and make your own magic.”

Using Kano software and a connected app, users can incant Engorgio, Reducio or Wingardium Leviosa, wave their wands and see serpents slither, toads transfigure, feathers float and Bott’s Every Flavour Beans expand on their screens before their eyes.
